Installing Dial-up for TurboNet
Windows XP

These instructions assume that the computer has an installed, properly functioning modem.  If it does not, one can be purchased at Cactus Computer or elsewhere.

Go to the control panel (click the Start button, then the Control Panel.  In the upper left corner, click Classic View.)  Double-click on the Network Connections  icon.  Click "Create a New Connection."  A connection wizard will appear.  Click Next.  Connect to the Internet.  Next.  Set up my connection manually.  Next.  Connect using a dial-up modem.  Next.

ISP Name is Cactus TurboNet.  Spelling is not important here.  The phone number is 882-8768.  Next.

Enter your username and password in the boxes.  Next.  Check the box to add a shortcut to your desktop.  Finish.  (You will probably want to delete the shortcut later, but it can help in troubleshooting.)

To set up a TurboNet email account using Outlook Express:

  1. Run Outlook Express.
  2. Click on the "Tools" menu, and pick "Accounts".
  3. Click the "Mail" tab.  You should get a screen like the one below.
  4. Click the "Add" button, and choose "Mail".
  5. Type your real name, as you want people to see it, in the Display Name area.
  6. Check "I already have an email address that I'd like to use" and type in your email address, with no spaces.  Capitals do not count.  Click the "Next" button.
  7. Your email server is a POP3, and its name is "mail.turbonet.com".  The outgoing mail server name is also "mail.turbonet.com".  Click "Next".
  8. Type your account name, without the "@turbonet.com" part.  If you don't want to type your password every time you connect (if you trust your house-mates not to peek, or don't care if they do) type in your password and check the "Remember password" box.  Do not check the authentication box.
  9. If asked which account to use for connection, use your regular dial-up account, not the new username.

Common Problems

If you have an email address from a different domain, such as myname@uidaho.edu, your email program may refuse to send email (or refuse to send outside of your old domain).  You'll need to change your SMTP server name.  In Outlook Express, go to the Tools menu and click Accounts.  Click the Mail tab.  Highlight the account name and click the Properties button.  Click the Servers tab.  Replace the SMTP server with mail.turbonet.com  Troubleshooting tips for several email programs can be found at
